This week Alan’s Sepia Saturday post shows the front cover of a 1930 Chevrolet brochure, so I wondered if I had some appropriate vehicle photos in Great Granny’s album – I thought I might have used them all in a previous Cars post (including a car made in Scotland by women for women) and found this
the buffoon on the right has Granny's hat on!
This is the Galloway saloon made by women, but look – curtains in the back! More information on the Galloway can be found on on the Old Classic Car website. Noted on the back of the photo is “Hovingham Sept 1928″ – Alan’s neck of the woods.
This vintage tourer seems to have been just the job for touring as here we have it again, this time the note on the back says “The Trossachs Road 21/22 Sep 1928”
I wonder if the driver is the same man – he’s wearing plus 4’s as in the previous photo, which makes me think he was a huntin’ shootin’ type. The trousers remind me of a corny Scottish postcard from my childhood, which they probably still sell today. It showed a cartoon of a hunter proudly returning from the hill with a stag which he had killed. Someone asks “Did you shoot him in the Trossachs?” and he replies “No, right between the eyes”. GROAN!

Congrats on the 50th post, Jo. This post is particularly wonderful. Both photos are great, but the second one makes me think that we need to design better looking cars (more like the one in your photo) and that we should also bring back plus fours.

After viewing several of the posts on vintage automobiles, we could definitely use some new designs. Curtains on the back side windows and a place to stash a purse would be high on my wish list!

I love the rear window curtains! And you sat up high in these old cars! I like that too.
I’ve just commented to Alan how great it was when a running board could double as a seat! How is it you granny always inspired buffoonery – or was up to something herself? She was fun to be with I think Jo.
No curtains now, just tinted windows which have no class at all. The only plus fours I still see are on older members (not me) at the golf club.
And I’ve seen a postcard like that in the local fleamarket.

Finally someone else with a car with window curtains. We have one from hubby’s family. Aren’t they looking like the 3 monkeys, Hear No, Speak No, See No evil there on the sideboard!

Didn’t see any curtains on the Tank Eating Tiger, but I’d have been frightened by the badge too as a small child. “See No Evil” appears to be wearing Granny’s hat – I think he must have been the clown among the friends, or deaf due to the hat. I have some similar pics to your Uncle Carl stood in front of his WWII tent – will no doubt post them as soon as a suitable Sepia Saturday comes up 🙂 Jo
No you haven’t gassed on at all : your posts are always a positive pleasure to read. And what a car. I do miss running boards, where on earth can you sit on the outside of a car these days. And as for Hovingham : I don’t think I have ever been there.
Aren’t the curtains wonderful! You would never see anything like that these days, such a shame.

Thanks for visiting and commenting – Plus 4’s are short trousers that stop 4″ below the knee, Plus 2’s are 2″ shorter. The Huntin’ Fishin’ Shootin’ type of gent used to wear them 🙂 Jo
