This is a lovely photo inherited from my maternal grandparents’ collection. It shows Granddad’s brother and my Granny has written (proudly) on it “Norman Cunningham Porter, 78 yrs, consultant specialist anaesthetist, with Rose, his granddaughter”. Rose looks so delighted with whatever her Granddad is sharing with her – I’m really tickled pink with this picture.

My Granddad was very proud of all his brothers and I would love to be in touch with others researching the same family – I have lots of photos which I’d be delighted to share.
Norman Cunningham Porter was born on 29 May 1914 in Pitlessie, Fife, to Rev William Henry Porter and Margaret (Minnie) Andrewina Dickson. William was ordained in November 1900 and was employed as the Minister in the Parish of Cults – the family lived in the same house as Sir David Wilkie, another Minister’s son and another source of pride 🙂
Norman moved to England and died in Somerset in 1995, but I don’t have access to English records (only Scottish ones) so I don’t have any further information on him and his family, but I’d be delighted to learn more.

Charming photo. Rose is having the time of her life, her grandfather must have said something really funny, if she is indeed laughing while looking at a Bible.
It looks like a Big Book to me – perhaps it’s a prop, and they stuck a picture of Thomas the Tank Engine in it? 🙂 She’s having a scream anyway. I think it’s a terrific photo 🙂 Jo
I wonder if this is a music box, or perhaps a combination photo album/music box? That would explain the delight on her face, and the somewhat guarded look on her grandfather’s face.

Cults was the name of the manse (the Minister’s house) for the Pitlessie area of Fife where my grandfather grew up and his father was the Minister – it’s also an area in Aberdeen, which is not related 🙂
That does look more like a box than a bible, and I don’t think she would be so amused by a bible.
I thought it looked like a massive book (hence the hope of a surviving family bible, although I would be more excited about it than Rose was!)
I does look like a box or that first page does not look like the cover of a book more a lid. That picture is enchanting. Making for great stories that we might imagine.

the carved decorations on the end don’t look like pages and the way the cover is open make it look like a box but the bottom cover and the back look like a book. wonder what it was.
Wonderful warm photo. At that moment he was a man purely delighted with the moment.
He looks every inch the Scottish doctor, you could almost see him making a guest appearance in Dr Finlay’s Casebook. But it really is an excellent photograph, taken by someone who certainly knew what they were doing with a camera.
What a beautifully compose photo and two photogenic subjects. Your Grandad’s brother is incredibly handsome and Rose is a delight.

Hi Jo, a wonderfully, lovely photo of grandfather and granddaughter. It transmits a moment of sheer happiness int the serene face of the grandfather and in the the happy giggles of Rose. I think it is so important to write who is who on the backside of old or new photos. I have started it but it is an immense task!
This is such a great black and white photo! It was probably taken in a studio by a professional? Whoever took it did a great job. Of course, the subjects look positively photogenic, so perhaps they didn’t need a professional. Is Rose still alive and have you met her? I wonder what more family information she could share. I wonder if she remembers having this photograph taken. Wouldn’t that be fun to learn more details about the book/box?! Thanks for sharing, Jo.
I’ve never met Rose – I’m guessing she was born in the late 80’s so perhaps someone on her side of the family will find my blog and get in touch. Fingers crossed! 🙂

Isn’t she just – very glam, as Mum would have said 🙂 Rose’s Scottish cousins are more wellies and jeans than fashion folk but we have the same blue eyes and love of burgers and chips 🙂

Which of the brothers is your grandfather? Sooo much to tell you. The book is a speaking picture book it belonged to my great grandmother so your great, great grandmother. It has pictures of animals and when you pull the boot button on the side it makes the relevant animal noise. Has delighted generations of children!

I’m Rose and that’s me and my grandpa, or “ba” as we knew him!
The book is indeed a sort of music box, it’s a beautiful old picture book with sound effects when strings are pulled.
The photo was taken by my mother, Mary.
