This weeks Sepia Saturday inspiration comes from a 1904 photo of Korean women playing a board game. I’ve raided Great Granny’s albums again, and while there are no photos of board games, Granny got up to various other activities with her cousins, the Hardies. These pictures are rather more sedate than previous ones!
Anyone for tennis? This picture was taken on a weekend away at Elmslea in Dundee in May 1928. The little girl looks really grumpy – was there a tantrum brewing up?
Granny, on the left, was keen on golf – this was taken in 1928 at Mount Pleasant. No loud checked trousers or Pringle jumpers for these two lady golfers. She must have been keen on watching golf as well as she took this photo of Bobby Jones (USA) playing in the British Open Golf Championships.
There’s no date noted on the back, but a quick internet search shows that Bobby won with a score of 285 at St Andrews in 1928. He also won the British Open Championship in 1926 and 1930.
I don’t know what game they are playing here – I can’t see any rackets or a ball – but they’ve rigged up a bit of netting in the garden. Any ideas? I see there’s a hat abandoned on the grass and hope it didn’t get trampled in the excitement….
Here we have a tennis court and a pile of rackets on the table but it seems that relaxing in deck chairs was preferable. Check out the hats and that parasol!
I’m very pleased to see the young lad cuddling the cat (I’m a Cat Person) and even the cat looks pleased 🙂 I suspect he was a big ginger cat.

The tennis outfits are so interesting. There was another post with a woman in an earlier even more modest outfit. Tennis dresses have come a long way.

Could they be playing “invisible badmitten”? Or perhaps “toss the hat over the net” and the man tossing didn’t make it, hence the hat on the grass.
The sweet little girl probably had other ideas for a fun day! These photos are great, the adults certainly were having fun!
That little girl is probably thinking I’d rather have a racket that isn’t as big as me. Oh for a summer you would require a parasol, love those cloche hats.
The girl in the foreground is posed much like the server in volleyball.
In a neighboring city, there is a neighborhood near the golf club with streets named for some of our local golf greats. And one street is named for Bobby Jones.
Jo, a beautiful and interesting collection of smart looking tennis and golf players in your family. Your photos are a great treasure. I used to love to play tennis, but there is not one photo around. So bad and sad! somebody must have been a keen photographer in your family. Golf and Tennis were not such competitive games as they are today.
I wonder whether the game in the garden could have been quoits? or battledore and shuttlecock, which can be played with the hands rather than bats, and a shuttlecock would be a bit small to show in a photo…
I’ve some recent golf photos but none will ever be as precious as that one of Bobby Jones at St Andrewsnearly 30 years before I went there.
Fine collection of sporting players who obviously had fun – except for the little girl.
Those are great photos. I liked seeing what they were wearing. I especially like all the hat and cat (?) in the last photo.
I tell my husband if golf outfits for women were prettier, I’d give the links a try. I would have been all in with those 1928 styles.
Wonderful! Maybe the little girl in the first one was a fierce contender. I would guess that the one with the net would be badminton … maybe they hadn’t begun their first game or had already put their equipment down.

Your granny was such a fun lady that I’m not at all surprised that you have pictures of her joining in various games. I think you’re right about the tot with the temper 🙂
