Another photo from my Granny’s album and, as usual, the gang of cousins and friends are messing about and having fun. But wait, Granny has her HAND ON THAT BLOKE’S KNEE! I’m shocked at such forward behaviour in the late 1920’s. I’m not surprised that her cousin is tickling her foot, or that she is resting her legs around her sister’s shoulders (although Chrissie looks none too happy), but what’s the Knee Thing all about?
After scanning this small photo and on close inspection, he looks like my Dad – Doh! It’s my Granddad, who she married several years later in 1934. I think this is the earliest photo I have of my Granddad, so this is a nice surprise for me. Granny lived at New Farm, Errol as a companion to her aunt and so her Hardie cousins were like brothers to her. Granddad farmed nearby and Auntie told me that this was how they met.

Hi Bob – Mary was my Granny and Chrissie was her sister. They seem to have had a lot of fun with their friends in the 1920’s judging by the photo album!

By now I have got used to your family photographs and could have recognised this as one of yours even in a “blind tasting”. There is such a sense of fun – so many interesting faces.
Granny’s album is becoming familiar to both of us then, Alan, even though I never really knew her – the wonders of the Interweb 🙂 Marvellous!

Some wonderful expressions here.Like Bob, I noticed the smokers immediately; it must be because we aren’t so used to seeing them these days. They look like any group of young people larking about; goodness know why we always think our grannies were staid….they were just like us!
Your granny looks to be the center of attention – and no wonder. She looks like the life of the party. Actually, they all look like fun. I wish I could have joined them for this outing.

Ticklebear – you could be absolutely correct – perhaps they didn’t know each other too well then and Granny was just a bit off balance, and things went on from there. Thanks for the input 🙂 Jo PS: will ask my auntie next time I see her if she has any input – she’s the only one left who might know about her Mum + Dad meeting

I love this photo! I wish I had one of my Nana like this photo. I always thought of her as so stuffy, but after she passed away the stories began to come out. I think I would have like knowing some of the stories when she was alive, it made her seem more like a real person than just an old grandmother.
Hi Far Side – I wish I had known her as an adult – she has a surviving daughter whose brains I must pick (when she’s not too busy with golf, swimming, grandchildren, baking etc) but apart from Auntie, we only have one of my cousins who is a couple of years older than me.

Jo, is the young man just in front of your grandfather a relative of his? I get a sense of a resemblance between them, but it may be my imagination – just wondered! It’s a great photo, as everyone else has said.
Hi Camilla – thanks for your comment. My Grandfather had two brothers, and I think you could be right – the man on the left also bears quite a resemblance. Perhaps all 3 brothers are in the photo. I need to do a bit more investigating! 🙂

Yes, Nancy – I reckon that’s Frank Hardie, her cousin, tickling her foot (they were up the tree in an earlier post, with Frank’s younger brother) they were always very close.
