Geneabloggers are asking for posts on Christmas Memories. Today’s is “Did you like fruitcake? Did your family receive fruitcakes? Have you ever re-gifted fruitcake? Have you ever devised creative uses for fruitcake?”
I like fruit, I like cake, but Fruitcake – yuk. Why are all Christmas “goodies” made of booze, dried peel, currants, sultanas and raisins? Christmas cake, mince pies, Christmas pudding – crammed full of the awful stuff. Mum made all the traditional British Christmas fare, including the Brewed Up For Months Pudding. She had to hide it from my Dad in between its liberal dousings of brandy, and one year she couldn’t find it in time for Christmas Day. I wasn’t sorry except that I didn’t get to see Dad setting fire to the abomination!
Given my disgust of Christmas puddings, Mum would make a trifle or a strawberry mousse, and meringues stuck together with whipped cream. I didn’t like cream either, but loved meringues, and conveniently my brother liked the cream but not the meringues. We had quite a little factory going at the dinner table, with him licking the cream off and passing me the meringues
I’d definitely re-gift a fruitcake, and as for creative uses, I believe it is excellent bait in mouse traps….
