As Alan is on his online tour of archive images and has reached Edinburgh, I thought for my Sepia Saturday post that I’d show you where I carry out my genealogy research in Edinburgh – General Register House, at the East end of Princes Street. Due to the current adverse weather conditions, two of the search rooms were closed yesterday, and I was the only researcher in the Adam Dome. Check out the fabulous ceiling
The walls are lined with various Registers and, in an alcove is a statue of King George III, which was originally placed in the centre of the Rotunda in 1791. He’s a little bit spooky to be alone with, if I’m honest 🙂 You can read more about this historic building here
Sorry the images aren’t brilliant, but I took them using my phone. While you’re all on a virtual tour of Scotland, why not visit the Orkney Archive blog (rather irreverent and amusing, I think).

What a marvelous place to do your research in, and there is nothing wrong with the images, they capture the place perfectly. Check out Dakotaboo’s post as I suspect you will be able to answer his question. And thanks for the link to the Orkney Archive blog, I’ll follow it up.
I will check on that. I don’t find any of my ancestry from Scotland, but always fascinated by it. Mine were from Wales and England. Get pics. Blessings

And I just sit at my messy desk while doing my genealogy research!
I envy you. It looks like a beautiful place.
It is a wonderful place – and when you are stuck for inspiration you can just look up for a couple of minutes to clear your head and think about something else before you
carry on. Or watch the seagulls on the domed roof 🙂 doing what seagulls do…
Well, I must admit that I am just slightly envious! Lucky you to have such a beautiful place to search out your ancestors. The dome is beautiful! Your phone did a good job with the photos. I think the photo of King George looks just a little ghostly! Thanks for sharing this wonderful place.
Thank you!
certainly is inspirational. i think i’d go there just to have tea and look around…

What a beautiful place to do your research!
I have never seen the likes of it..so thanks for the photos..the dome is beautiful..I am sure George the III is harmless..but I don’t think I would want to be all alone with him either:)
